Dandylion is a weed who resembles a lion and one day he joined the class of miss Gardener. Dandylion was a chirpy little soul and he was a bit different from his usual classmates. His teacher appointed a boy named Basil to take care of him. Dandylion was so cheerful and wherever he goes, the place becomes lively. But he has a bit of difficulty and out of excitement he will bounce and cheer loudly. His classmates were not fond of this and one day they said he doesn’t look like us and he is a weed. Dandylion was so devastated to hear this and tried hard to behave like them until his wise grandpa gave him some pearls of wisdom. The whole class started to miss Dandylion and do you think the grandpa’s wisdom will help him to rejoin the school?
The message conveyed through this book is too good; “being different is special and that we all need surprises to stir up our lives.”
We all are not robots and we need some fun to stir our life. I would recommend this book to read in a classroom and remind kids it’s ok to be different and accept students who are trying to fit in. Lot’s of classroom politics will happen and kids will isolate them because they are different. I hope those kids learn this trait and start to accept their peers.
I still worry about how Nathan will fit in a class, as he is so energetic and he always runs around. But when I read books like this, I pat myself and say he will fit in and he can be himself. Each kid is special in their own way and it’s us to find and cherish that.
