Princess and the Pea retold and illustrated by Rachel Isadora, is an old fairytale but retold as an African folk tale.
There was an African prince who was in search of a real princess. He travelled all over the world and something was missing with each princess he met. He always came back home dejected and sad. One day, there was a storm and they heard a knock. The king ran to open it and found a drenched girl standing outside. The girl said, she was a real princess, but the queen didn’t believe her by seeing her outward appearance. So she gave a test to test her sensitivity.
Will the princess pass the test? What test could it be? Will it relate to the title of the book?
The illustrations are so vibrant, and one can learn to draw African art by following the illustrations. The last page teaches the kid to say hello in three African languages.
A great book for kids above four years and a book to talk about, never judge anyone by seeing their outward appearance. A great conversation starter for all school-going kids.
