WHAT ARE 1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN?

This is a free program that encourages you to read 1000 books with your child before he or she enters school–goal experts say children need to help them learn to read for themselves. One of the best ways to encourage learning is to share books every day. Reading together helps develop important pre-reading skills that provide a solid reading foundation. A doable program where you can read any book many times to your child to promote the joy of reading.

This is a program popular in the USA libraries and once the child enrols under this program, they are required to complete reading 1000 books before they turn 5. The parent can keep track of the books they read with the child, and at certain milestones, the child earns prizes in the library. Once the child has read 1,000 books, they’ve completed the program and receive great accolades, besides all the benefits of being exposed to a variety of children’s literature. It is not compulsory to read 1000 different books. If a child reads a book 100 times, they also count it in the program.

HOW DID I FIND THIS PROGRAM?

A social media post helped me to learn about this program and explore the workable opportunities.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO DO THIS PROGRAM IN INDIA?

It is completely feasible to do this program in India. The only trouble is, you have to track the book you are reading with your child. There are reading logs available on the website of 1000booksbeforekindergarten download the logs and start adding the name of the books you are reading to your child. I would suggest you daily update the sheets to make your work easier. You don’t want to add yourself to any library in India. Visit the 1000 books before kindergarten website and start tracking the sheets.

The website also has certificates for every 100 books your child reads under the program. You can download each certificate and share it on social media with your child holding it. At the end of 1000 reads, there is an editable certificate and you can save it as a keepsake for your child.

WHO CAN JOIN IN THIS PROGRAM?

A child right from birth to age five is eligible for this program. This is an all-year program and you can take this challenge anytime.

DOES THIS OVERWHELM THE PARTICIPANTS?

No. The goal is to read 1000 books and one book a day makes 365 books a year, and 730 books in two years and in three years, you can finish reading 1000 books. If you read over two books a day, you can finish it sooner. There’s no rush—the program ends when your child finishes 1000 books, or they enter Kindergarten, whichever comes first.

WHERE ELSE CAN YOU TRACK BOOKS?

If you don’t have time to track all the books in the reading log, you can track them in Goodreads or Libib. I downloaded the Libib app for adding all my home library books and it was very helpful in knowing what all I have in our library.

The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a free, fun way to bond with your child and develop their literacy skills at a young age.
