WHAT IS 1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN?
This is a free program that encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before they start school. Child development experts say that children need help learning to read on their own, and one of the best ways to encourage this is to share books with them every day. Reading together helps children develop important pre-reading skills that provide a solid foundation for reading. This program is doable because you can read any book multiple times to your child to promote the joy of reading.
The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is popular in libraries across the United States. Once a child enrolls in this program, they are required to read 1,000 books before their fifth birthday. Parents can keep track of the books their child reads, and the child earns prizes at certain milestones in the program. Upon completing the program, children receive special recognition and the benefits of having been exposed to a variety of children’s literature. It is not necessary to read 1,000 different books; if a child reads the same book multiple times, it still counts toward the program.
HOW DID I FIND THIS PROGRAM?
I learned about this program from a social media post. The post also helped me look into the available opportunities.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO DO THIS PROGRAM IN INDIA?
Participating in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is entirely doable in India. However, you must keep track of the books you read with your child. Reading logs are available on the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten website. Download the logs and begin recording the titles of the books you read to your child. I recommend updating the sheets daily to simplify your task. There is no need to register with any library in India. Simply visit the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten website and begin tracking your progress. The website also offers certificates for every 100 books your child reads as part of the program. You can download each certificate and share it on social media with a photo of your child holding it. Upon completing 1000 reads, there is an editable certificate that you can save as a keepsake for your child.
WHO CAN JOIN IN THIS PROGRAM?
A child right from birth to age five is eligible for this program. This is an all-year program and you can take this challenge anytime.
DOES THIS OVERWHELM PARTICIPANTS?
The goal of the program is to read 1,000 books. Reading one book a day will allow you to complete 365 books in a year, 730 books in two years, and 1,000 books in three years. If you read more than two books a day, you can finish the program sooner. There’s no rush, though—the program ends when your child finishes 1,000 books or enters kindergarten, whichever comes first.
WHERE ELSE CAN YOU TRACK BOOKS?
If you don’t have time to keep track of all the books in your reading log, you can use Goodreads or Libib to track them instead. I downloaded the Libib app to add all my home library books, and it was very helpful in allowing me to see everything I have in my library.
The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a free, fun way to bond with your child and develop their literacy skills at a young age.
