God the author of marriage

SCRIPTURAL MESSAGELeave a Comment on God the author of marriage

God the author of marriage

The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Genesis 2:23,24

After finishing Genesis 2, I find it fitting to read Verses 23 and 24 at wedding ceremonies. Unfortunately, it is common for the groom’s parents to meddle in matters that do not concern them. This verse serves as a reminder of why it is important for a man to leave his parents and start a new life with his spouse. We can see that God, the original creator of marriage, chose the word “That is why a man leaves”  very wisely when uniting a man and a woman.

Opinions may vary and people may question my ideas since it is customary for people to voice their thoughts that a bride needs to detach from her parents and become part of her husband’s family. Although there is commonly accepted language that implies the bride should go, the Book of Genesis speaks of a man departing from his family to establish his own.

Upon marriage, two individuals join as a union and form one flesh. This newly formed family is a branch off of either of their parents’ families, thus paving the way for a new generation. It is very important for parents to take a step back and see how this new branch is evolving. Encourage them to always keep Jesus at the head of the household and ask Him for whatever they need. God designed marriage to meet the needs for companionship and to provide a picture of our relationship with Him.

Rather than intervening, what should parents do regarding their child’s marriage? Ask God to bless the couple and guide them as they build their marriage around their faith in Jesus.
