Left Alone With God

“So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. Genesis 32:24”

“Left alone!” These words can mean different things to different people. For some, they mean feeling lonely and sad, while for others, they mean having a chance to rest and find peace.

If we were left alone without God, it would be a terrible thing. But if we spend time alone with Him, it can be like a taste of heaven! And if His followers spent more time alone with Him, we would have more people who were strong in their faith. Jesus showed us how important it is to spend time alone with God. Remember how often He went away to be alone with God? There was a good reason why He said, “When you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray” (Matthew 6:6).

The great miracles of Elijah and Elisha took place when they were alone with God. Jacob was alone with God when he became a prince (Genesis 32:28). Joshua was alone when the Lord came to him (Joshua 1:1). Gideon and Jephthah were by themselves when commissioned to save Israel (Judges 6:11; 11:29). Moses was by himself at the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-5), Cornelius was praying by himself when the Angel of God came to him (Acts 10:1-4). No one was with Peter on the housetop when he was instructed to go to the Gentiles (Acts 10:9-28). John the Baptist was alone in the wilderness (Luke 1:80), and John the Beloved was alone on the island of Patmos when he was the closest to God (Revelation 1:9).

Spend time alone with God. If we don’t, we miss out on blessings for ourselves and others. Remember, material blessings should not be our priority to pass on to the next generation. Instead, we should focus on passing on spiritual blessings, just as Elijah passed them on to Elisha. We might do less visible work, but our work will be more meaningful and powerful. People will see Jesus in our lives. Spending time alone with God in prayer is very important.
