BOOK: ARLO AND PIPS: KING OF THE BIRDS
AUTHOR & ILLUSTRATOR: ELISE GRAVEL

AGE RECOMMENDED: 6+
Another engaging and captivating graphic novel for early readers. It humorously and delightfully introduces the world of crows. In the story, Arlo and Pips are the main characters. Arlo is a crow, and Pips is a small bird. Pips initiated a conversation with Arlo when he overheard Arlo claiming to be the king of the birds. Pips could not accept this and tried to explain why a crow could not be the best in every way. But Arlo stuck to his claim and this series of conversations between them takes us into the world of crows and allows us to learn more about their nature. Are crows really as smart as Arlo claims? Arlo and Pips embark on a journey of newfound friendship, characterized by witty banter and subtle sarcasm.
Nathan loves this book because it’s easy for him to read on his own, and he also loves it when I read it. The cartoon illustrations are very engaging, and they help keep Nathan’s attention throughout the entire book. The facts about crows are cleverly woven into the story through footnotes, and the subtle humour adds to the book’s overall appeal.
We will be picking up the rest of the Arlo and Pips series. It is a very addictive read for early readers.
