REVIEW: Bug Scouts By Mike Lowery

BOOK: BUG SCOUTS

AUTHOR & ILLUSTRATOR: MIKE LOWERY

PUBLISHER: GRAPHIX

PAGES: 64

AGE RECOMMENDED: 6+

Graphic novels are perfect books for kids who are ready to read but still miss their picture books. Nathan’s first graphic novel was “Bug Scouts”, and it greatly aided his transition from picture books.

Bug Scouts is a simple and short graphic novel written for children between the ages of 6 and 8. These children learn many simple words and attempt to read them everywhere they go. They also try to form sentences using these words. “Bug Scouts” combines all of these elements and encourages children to reread the entire series repeatedly.

1. BUG SCOUTS: OUT IN THE WILD

“Bug Scouts Out in the Wild” is a book about a unique scout troop comprised entirely of bugs. The members of the troop include Doug, a small winged bug (scientific name: Somekindicus Bugicus); Abby, an earthworm who is passionate about collecting badges above all else; and Josh, a somewhat grumpy spider who is only there for the snacks. Luna, a new bug, stumbles upon a sign for the bug scouts’ secret hideout and decides to join the group. The Bug Scouts had a mission: to earn the foraging bug badge, which they could only get if they successfully found and identified an edible plant. Together, they ventured into the woods, seeking both adventure and something to eat. But would they be able to avoid the poisonous plants and escape being eaten by a clever frog?

A book filled with humour, lots of giggles, a passion for getting badges, simple words, and vivid illustrations all come together to create a perfect book for a six year old child.

2. BUG SCOUTS: CAMP OUT

The next adventure for Bug Scouts Doug, Abby, Josh, and Luna is going camping to obtain their camping bug Badge. Everyone (except for Josh) is excited for a night of roasting s’mores, singing by the campfire, and telling spooky ghost stories. But all of a sudden, they start to hear strange sounds. Is there a terrifying creature hiding in the forest with them? What’s that noise in the forest that’s preventing everyone from falling asleep? Will the Bug Scouts be able to spend the entire night in their tent?

Another book that was a breeze to read, packed with bright illustrations and suspense we finished it in one go and would have read it multiple times.
