Benefits of re-reading a book: A child’s perspective

There were days when I saw Nathan rereading the same book repeatedly, and I wondered if there was any value in this behaviour. After observing his patterns, I discovered some interesting things. There are many hidden benefits to why a child finds joy in familiar stories.

1. LOVE FOR READING:

When I first observed him, I realized that I didn’t need to tell him to turn off the television and pick up a book. He instinctively chooses a well read book and becomes engrossed in reading. This naturally helps him expand his knowledge and explore the captivating worlds of books.

2.  BUILDS COMFORT:

There are certain books he pulls out before bedtime, and I wondered why he kept choosing the same one. When I asked him, he said that he likes the book and that it helps him fall asleep. So, rereading a book can help children reduce their stress and feel the comfort and warmth that a parent can provide.

3. LEARNING NEW WORDS AND INCREASE IN FLUENCY

Through repeated exposure to reading the same book, he became familiar with new words and started to recognise the words easily. I noticed a change in his pronunciation of certain words, and his reading speed has increased. Additionally, the words he uses in daily conversation have become more refined.

4. CONFIDANT READER

The more he started reading the same graphic novel, the easier it became for me to introduce the next part of the book. He was able to connect with the story more deeply, and he felt confident telling me what the book was about and why he needed the second book in the series. He felt appreciated and confident that he could grasp the plot himself.

5. REINFORCES MEMORY

Unknowingly, he was able to build and strengthen his memory. This was a win for me, and it helped him to learn his schoolwork easily and recall certain things with ease.

All these observations took me back to his toddler days when I read him The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Ruby Duck, Digger, and Dinosaur books repeatedly. Sometimes I even hid his favorite books to read him a new book. Now he is old enough to read books himself, and sometimes I am lucky enough to read his graphic novels for him. He still snuggles closely to me when I read to him, just like in the old days.

So what are you waiting for? Let them reread any book for as long as they want. Allow them to decide when they are ready for a new book.
